PART 1: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. BEFORE YOU BUY

Do I need a truck for pickup?

Yes. These are large, mature bushes that require a pickup truck or flatbed.

Each bush is approximately 4–6 feet tall and weighs 40–100 lbs, including the soil around its roots.

Do I need more than one bush to produce blueberries?

No. Duke blueberries are self-fertile, meaning a single bush can produce fruit.

Having more bushes can encourage pollinator activity. Growing another blueberry variety that flowers around the same time can also improve pollination and fruit production.

Can I grow blueberries in my backyard?

Absolutely, provided you have:

✅ A sunny location

✅ Enough space for the bush

✅ Acidic, well-drained soil

We'll show you how to prepare everything below.

2. PURCHASING & PICKUP

How much do they cost?

Comparable mature bushes can retail for $100+.

A root ball is simply the soil and roots held together at the bottom of the bush.

Everything is ready for pickup.

PART 2: YOUR STEP-BY-STEP PLANTING GUIDE

STEP 1: BEFORE BRINGING YOUR BUSH HOME

What supplies do I need?

Here's a simple shopping checklist.

☐ Shovel

☐ Garden hose or watering can

☐ Soil pH test kit

☐ Mulch, such as pine bark or aged wood chips

☐ Soil amendments, only if your soil test shows they're needed

You can find most of these at Canadian Tire, Home Depot, or a local garden centre.

Where should I plant my bush?

Choose a location with:

✅ 6–8 hours of direct sunlight each day

✅ Approximately 4–6 feet of space between bushes

✅ Soil that doesn't stay waterlogged after heavy rain

✅ Enough room to reach the bush for picking and pruning

Blueberries grow best when their roots have moisture and air.

How do I make my soil acidic enough?

This is one of the most important parts of growing blueberries.

Blueberries like acidic soil, which is different from what many other garden plants prefer.

Your target soil pH is 4.5–5.2.

A pH number tells you how acidic your soil is. The lower the number, the more acidic it is.

1. Test your soil

Buy a soil pH test kit from a garden centre.

Follow the kit instructions using soil from where you plan to plant.

Here's how to understand your result:

✅ 4.5–5.2: Great. Your soil is in the ideal range.

🟡 5.3–5.5: Slightly high. You may need a small adjustment.

🟡 5.6–6.5: Your soil needs preparation.

🟡 Above 6.5: Consider preparing a separate acidic raised bed.

2. What if my soil isn't acidic enough?

Visit a garden centre and ask:

"I'm planting a blueberry bush. My soil pH is ___. What should I use to bring it to approximately 4.5–5.2?"

Common products include:

✅ Elemental sulfur: Gradually lowers soil pH.

✅ Sphagnum peat moss: Can help prepare an acidic growing area.

✅ Pine bark: Useful in appropriate blueberry soil mixes and as mulch.

3. Prepare your planting area

If only a small adjustment is needed, follow the soil acidifier's instructions based on your soil test and soil type.

If your soil is much too high in pH, consider a raised planting bed filled with a suitable acidic blueberry growing mix.

Ask your garden centre for a mix appropriate for outdoor blueberries, rather than ordinary garden soil.

4. Test the prepared soil again

Before planting, check that the growing area is near pH 4.5–5.2.

Elemental sulfur works gradually and can take months to change soil pH. It isn't an instant fix.

Helpful tips

✅ Check soil pH again each spring.

✅ Use fertilizer intended for blueberries.

✅ Keep mulch around the plant.

✅ Avoid adding garden lime, which raises pH.

✅ Don't rely on coffee grounds, vinegar, or lemon juice to adjust soil pH.

The simple rule: Test your soil, prepare it if needed, and test again.

How do I know if my soil drains well?

You can do a simple test.

  1. Dig a hole approximately 12 inches deep.

  2. Fill it with water and let it drain.

  3. Fill it again and see how quickly the water disappears.

If water remains into the next day, your location may have poor drainage.

In that case, a properly prepared raised bed may be a better choice.

STEP 2: BRINGING YOUR BUSH HOME & PLANTING IT

When should I plant my blueberry bush?

Fall and early spring are excellent planting seasons.

October and November are generally ideal in the Fraser Valley, as long as the ground isn't frozen or waterlogged.

Prepare your planting location before pickup whenever possible.

What should I do when I get home?

Your bush has already been dug out, so protecting the soil and roots is important.

✅ Keep the root ball moist.

✅ Place it somewhere cool and sheltered if you're not planting immediately.

✅ Protect it from drying winds and direct sun while waiting.

✅ Avoid unnecessarily disturbing the soil around the roots.

Ideally, plant the same day or within 24–48 hours.

If you need longer, temporarily cover the root ball with moist soil or mulch and keep it sheltered until your planting area is ready.

How do I plant my blueberry bush?

Follow these seven steps.

1. Dig your hole

Make the hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball, but no deeper than the root ball itself.

For example, if the root ball is 18 inches wide and 12 inches tall, dig approximately 36 inches wide and 12 inches deep.

2. Check the planting depth

Look at where the soil originally met the stems.

You'll want the bush sitting at approximately that same depth after planting.

3. Place the bush in the hole

Gently lower the bush into place.

Keep the existing root ball together as much as possible.

4. Fill in around the roots

Use your prepared soil to fill the space around the root ball.

Gently press the soil down with your hands to remove large air gaps. Don't pack it tightly.

This is called backfilling.

5. Water thoroughly

Slowly water the area around the root ball so the soil settles around the roots.

6. Add mulch

Spread approximately 2–4 inches of aged wood chips or pine bark over the soil around the bush.

Mulch is simply a protective layer placed on top of the soil.

Keep a few inches of space around the stems.

7. Check everything

Make sure the bush is upright, the roots are covered, and the soil is evenly moist.

Your bush is planted.

Can I grow my bush in a pot?

Maybe, but I don't recommend it.

These are mature 10-year-old bushes with established root systems.

They would need exceptionally large containers, acidic growing medium, reliable watering, and proper drainage.

Planting directly in the ground is the better option for most buyers.

STEP 3: HELPING YOUR BLUEBERRY BUSH THRIVE

How often should I water it?

Immediately after planting

Give the bush a thorough watering.

During the first 1–2 weeks

Check the soil every day.

Push your finger approximately 2 inches into the soil near the root ball.

✅ Feels moist? You're doing well.

✅ Feels dry? Give it a slow, thorough watering.

✅ Feels soggy or has standing water? Wait and check the drainage.

During the first growing season

Continue checking regularly, especially in warm or dry weather.

You don't need to water every day if the soil is already moist from rain.

The goal is consistent moisture without waterlogging.

Does my bush need fertilizer?

Yes, but don't rush to fertilize immediately after fall planting.

In spring:

✅ Choose fertilizer labelled for blueberries or acid-loving plants.

✅ Follow the package instructions.

✅ Keep concentrated fertilizer away from the stems.

✅ Avoid applying more than recommended.

Blueberries have shallow roots, so gentle, appropriate feeding is best.

Does my blueberry bush need pruning?

Not right now, as we've pre-p
